[epcl_box type=”information”]در زبان انگلیسی، جملات مجهول (Passive Voice) شکل دیگری از ساختار جملات هستند که در آن فاعل جمله، عمل انجام شده را تحمل می‌کند، اما مفعول به‌صورت نهفته و معمولاً به صورت صریح در جمله ظاهر نمی‌شود یا به‌صورت ضمنی (implicit) نشان داده می‌شود.[/epcl_box]
Somebody stole my laptop. (فاعل = Somebody / فعل(verb) = stole / مفعول = my laptop)
[epcl_box type=”information”]مجهول (Passive) در زبان انگلیسی زمانی استفاده می‌شود که بخواهیم بر فعل (verb) و مفعول(adverb) جمله به جای فاعل تأکید کنیم. این بدان معنی است که موضوع یا از خود عمل اهمیت کمتری دارد یا اینکه ما نمی‌دانیم موضوع کیست یا چیست.[/epcl_box]
به مثال‌های زیر دقت کنید:
My laptop was stolen. (مفعول = My laptop / فعل= was stolen)
Napa Valley is known for its excellent wines. [Passive = مجهول]
[Many people] know Napa Valley for its excellent wines. [Active = معلوم]
Twenty civilians were killed in the bomb explosion. [Passive = مجهول]
Someone killed twenty civilians in the bomb explosion. [Active = معلوم]

Passive: The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. (agent =Leonardo Da Vinci)
Active: Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.
اکثر مربیان و ویراستاران رایتینگ توصیه می‌کنند در صورت امکان از مجهول استفاده نکنید. دلیل این امر این است که وقتی از افعال معلوم استفاده می‌کنید، نوشته‌ی شما واضح‌‍تر و کمتر پیچیده می‌شود؛ اما به یاد داشته باشید که در آزمون‌های بین‌المللی استفاده درست و به موقع از مجهول باعث افزایش نمره‌ی شما می‌شود.
Active: While Mr. Taylor was driving down Highway 101, a police officer pulled him over and gave him a speeding ticket.
Passive: While Mr. Taylor was driving down Highway 101, he was pulled over and given a ticket by a police officer.
اگر جمله طولانی است و می‌دانید موضوع چه کسی است، بهتر است از جملات معلوم استفاده کنید. مجهول (Passive) در زبان انگلیسی اغلب برای گزارش چیزی یا بیان یک واقعیت استفاده می‌شود؛ مانند:
Highway 15 was closed yesterday due to a serious road accident.
A lot of corn is grown in Iowa.
تفاوت جملات Active و Passive
برای هر کدام از زمان‌ها (Tense) در زبان انگلیسی یک ساختار مجهول وجود دارد و وابسته به هر زمان ما یک ساختار جداگانه داریم که در جدول زیر برای شما تهیه شده است:

تمام قوانین منفی کردن و سوالات مجهول (Passive) در زبان انگلیسی مانند جملات معلوم است.
